Dr. Michael C. Melton has been a professional educator for 27 years and has previously worked in the Letcher County and Bath County school districts. He spent 25 years in Letcher County starting his career as a Social Studies teacher and Head Baseball Coach. During his tenure at Letcher County he served additionally as a high school assistant principal, K-8 elementary principal, elementary athletic administrator, and high school athletic administrator. In July of 2021 Dr. Melton assumed the Director of Transportation, Maintenance, and Facilities role for the Bath County Schools. While in those roles he was additionally responsible for all of the district's insurance brokerage, bidding, and was the district lead with construction. On November 1st, 2022, he was transferred to the vacant Bath County Director of Pupil Personnel position. While in that role he directed Safe Schools, Counseling Services, FRYSC, Health Services, Extended School Services, and served additionally as the District Athletic Administrator. Dr. Melton has driven a school bus for more than 20 years and is a Certified Bus Driver Trainer as well.

Dr. Melton received his B.A. in Social Studies, Secondary Education from Alice Lloyd College in 1991, his M.A. in Secondary Education from Morehead State University in 1996, a M.A. School Administration/Principalship from Union College in 2002, and earned his Doctorate of Educational Leadership from Morehead State University in 2016. He has been married to his wife Londa for 24 years, 1 stepson, and has 2 grandchildren and a host of great nephews and nieces that he enjoys spending time with. He also enjoys being outdoors and reading.

Dr. Melton will be filling the vacant superintendent position left by retiring superintendent, Debbie Stephens, who served in a variety of roles in the district during her nearly 31-year tenure. She began her educational career as a substitute teacher, then earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as a Rank I in education at Morehead State University. She served the district as special education teacher, middle school language arts teacher, middle school principal, purchasing agent, Extended School Services Coordinator, FRYSC District Contact, and drug testing coordinator before serving as superintendent for the past six years.
