Dear Staff, Students, and Parents/Guardians;
I wanted to share some information about SB 181, recent legislation regarding school personnel communication with students. SB 181 focuses on student safety, transparency, and parental oversight of electronic communication between staff, volunteers, and students.
As of June 27, 2025, all school related communications must be conducted through board approved platforms that can be traceable and monitored.
Personal text messages, personal emails, or social media messaging (individual or in group chats) are no longer allowable as of June 27, 2025. School related communications will adhere to the board approved traceable online communication platforms.
SB 181 legislation states that within the first 10 days of school year, principals will notify parents how to review and monitor communication between staff, volunteers, coaches, and students. There are family member exemptions that SB 181 allows and exempt from the restrictions. SB 181 also allows for parents to sign a waiver to allow communication between their child and individual staff members, individual coaches, and/or individual volunteers that are outside of the traceable platforms.
The following have been board approved for the 2025-2026 Traceable Communication Platforms: Google Suites, Edgenuity, and Apptegy. The school has previously utilized Google Suite and Edgenuity as instructional platforms. Apptegy is the board approved traceable communication platform where all school related electronic communication will occur.
Based on SB 181, all social media communications, personal emails (not Elliott County’s School Email), group text, individual text, or other online communications between students and staff/coaches/volunteers are no longer permitted unless a waiver is signed by parents and turned into the school principal.
Once Apptegy is ready for implementation, principals will notify parents and students of the procedures for the online communication platform.
Thank you for your cooperation and understanding as we navigate this initiative.
Respectfully,
Dolly Fannin
